The upcoming Penang LRT Mutiara Line is expected to become one of the most important public transportation projects in northern Malaysia, offering faster and more reliable travel between Penang Island and the mainland in just 8 minutes!
One of the project’s biggest highlights is the proposed cross-sea rail connection linking Macallum and Penang Sentral. Once completed, we may be able to travel across the Penang channel in only around 8 minutes, significantly faster compared to current peak-hour road travel.
The new rail bridge is also expected to become a major landmark for Penang. According to project details released during the Public Inspection exercise, the bridge will feature navigation spans designed to allow large ships and ferries to pass underneath.
The Penang LRT project has received strong public attention in recent months, with many residents showing support for improved public transport connectivity and reduced traffic congestion across the state.
Construction for the Mutiara Line began in 2025, while operations are currently targeted to begin in 2031. The full alignment is expected to connect key locations including Komtar, Bayan Lepas, Silicon Island, and Penang Sentral.
As Penang continues to grow economically and technologically, the Penang LRT could play a major role in shaping the future of transportation, tourism, and urban development throughout the region.
